Taking the LSAT

If you want to go to law school you will want to take the LSAT exam. Any law schools that are approved by the American Bar Association are going to require you to take the Law School Admission Test, or LSAT. This test, which was created by the Law School Admission Council measure your reading and verbal reasoning skills. These are skills that will be very important if you pursue a career in law. If you're planning a career in law, then you need to get prepared for the LSAT now. It's really never too early to start studying and preparing but make sure you don't stress yourself out needlessly so that you are nervous and do poorly on the test.

The LSAT is made up of five different sections to have the complete test. These sections are logical reasoning, reading comprehension, logic games, experimental, and writing sample. They each have multiple choice questions and you have 35 minutes to complete them. There is also a brief essay section that you have 30 minutes to complete. You will not know exactly what your essay question will be but you can still study and prepare for it.

You can set up an account with the Law School Admission Council which will let you be emailed a copy of your score report three weeks after taking your exam. There are no deductions made for incorrect answers so you should feel encouraged to guess on ones that you might not know. However, with proper preparation, you should feel pretty confident in your ability to take the LSAT without having to guess on answers.

LSAT Prep Courses

If you want to get prepared before you take the LSAT, then you will want to sign up for an LSAT prep course and maybe even buy a LSAT prep book. There are several different books, lessons and test questions available on the market to help prepare you for the LSAT and to make it easier for you to study. These books will have sample LSAT test questions to help you get an idea for what you will encounter when you take the test for real. Many people take LSAT prep to prepare themselves for the test. There is no way to know exactly what questions will be on the test and what order they will be in because this changes each time the test is given. However, LSAT prep classes can help you prepare.

You can find out more LSAT information from an LSAT study course and you can also study with other people who are planning to take the LSAT soon, too. Taking the Test

You may also want to take an LSAT pretest which can help you know what to expect on the real LSAT test when you sign up to take it. Remember also that after you have studied and prepared and you think you are ready to take the test that you will need to register beforehand and choose your test date.

The LSAT is usually only held on specific dates that are planned in advance so you will need to be sure you register and sign up for one of those predetermined dates. It is typically given four times each year at locations around the country. You will want to find out what these dates are and choose one that allows you time to properly prepare. You can visit the LSAT website to find out what those dates are and how to sign up.

Here are the different sections of the LSAT:

SECTION Total amount of time allotted Number of questions Time to answer each question
Analytical Reasoning 35 min 25 1.4 min
Logical Reasoning 35 min 25 1.4 min
Reading Comprehension 35 min 25 1.4 min
Analytical Reasoning/ Logical Reasoning/ Reading

Writing Sample 30 min 1 30 min

In between each section of the test, you will be given the opportunity to take a break. Even if you are feeling anxious or excited to continue, it is a good idea to have a break to rest your mind for a bit and go into the new section with a fresh outlook. When taking the LSAT, just like other tests you may have taken back in high school or college, you need to remember to get a good night's rest the night before. It's also important that you eat a healthy meal the night before to give yourself "brain food". If you tend to get nervous however, you might not want to eat a large breakfast. Skipping breakfast altogether is not a good idea so try instead to have a light breakfast of toast, cereal of fresh fruit. This will prevent you from going with an empty stomach but keep you from feeling sick as well. Remember that when you go prepared, you will do your best.

LSAT scores will be determined within three weeks of the test date and sent to you by email, regular mail or you can obtain them by telephone. Remember that if you prepare properly before you take the LSAT, you should do very well on it.
